Abigail Williams is a woman with a secret. Several years ago, she was charmed into an illicit affair as the secret mistress of an earl. She fell in love, allured by his seductive words, only to have her heart shattered. After she became pregnant with his child, the scandal exploded publicly, driving Abby and her blacksmith father, to flee from their home in England across the ocean to an early 1800s North American frontier.

Now, in 1806, Abby has a new life. Posing as a widow, she travels with her father and her son, Ben, to Fort Edmonton, where she will work as the fort horseshoer under the guidance of her father, the blacksmith. She meets Henry, a handsome English officer who makes his affection for Abby known, and Gabriel, a French trapper who is angry and abrupt, always making her uncomfortable in his presence. When Abby is required to work at Fort Augustus, she slowly gets to know Gabriel, and realizes that he has suffered heartache of his own. Underneath the gruff exterior, she discovers a man who, like herself, is unable to trust and love. Despite her best intentions, she finds herself with a growing affection for this seemingly unlovable man.

When Abby’s secret comes to light, she must flee the fort, taking her son Ben into the unforgiving wilderness, leaving her dying father behind. Set on the barren fur trade lands of the Canadian prairies, The Fort is a second-chance story of secrets, love, and forgiveness that will warm the coldest of broken hearts.
